The Role of Growth Factors

Act as signalling molecules
Growth Factor

What is a Growth Factor

The term growth factor is generally used to describe a protein or peptide whose function is predominantly related to the regulation of target tissue growth and potential proliferation.

Using Growth Factors

These important signalling molecules are naturally occuring substances capable of stimulating cellular growth, proliferation, healing and cellular differentiation. Aesthetic medicine is becoming more focused on regenerative therapy, however it is important to understand the importance of origin and why some skincare companies are trying to hoodwink the consumer with claims of growth factor rich or stem cell serums for topical use.

Not All Growth Factors Are Made Equal

Growth factors work best when paired up with other growth factors and used synergistically. Look out for IGF-1, TGF-beta3, aFGF, bFGF, IL-10, EFG, PDGF, KGF, IGF-2, VEGF. Targeted growth factors act upon the skin to stimulate new collagen, fibrin and elastin.

Growth factors are large molecules and are unable to pass through the outer layer of the skin, therefore the most effective delivery method is micro-needling or/and injection.

Injectable Platelet Rich Fibrin (i-PRF)

Stem cells release growth factors, but so do platelets! These tiny fragments of cells are unique powerhouses and release 7 fundamental growth factors once activated in addition to over 300 bioactive substances.

i-PRF is the most advanced form of PRP utilising activated platelets, the benefit of using the patient's own blood will guarantee biocompatibility and efficacy with zero risk of an adverse reaction. For growth factors to be effective, they must enter the skin and have high enough concentrations and be targeted.

Considerations

The method which the product enters the skin in the safest concentration is key. Growth factor selection should be from a reputable company with research-led accountability. Cosmo Pro are the uk distributor for Hikari Meso Cocktails and the i-PRF system, it is important to understand the manufacturing process to ensure compliance and safety.
