What are the differences?
What is Plasma?
Plasma is called the fourth state of matter after solid, liquid and gas. It is a state of matter in which an ionized substance becomes highly electrically conductive to the point that long-range electric and magnetic fields dominate its behaviour.
The use of plasma in medical field goes back to World War II, where it was used to sterilise wounds and surgical equipment.
Plasma Sublimation
Also known as surgical plasma or plasma soft surgery, this modality sublimate’s’ the tissue being treated via gas particles in the air between the probe and the skin being treated, to create an electrical arc. It is a blind heat, therefore does not need a chromophore thus no heat spreads to the surrounding tissue, this causes the tissue to contract and tighten.
The most common use is blepharoplasty, a corrective procedure that addresses issues of the eyelids, which tightens the skin around the eyes reducing droop, puffiness and excess skin. However it can be used for a range of other issues including eye bags, face and neck lifts, removing skin tags, rhytides, laxity.
Downtime
The downtime associated with soft surgery is far less than with conventional surgery, however there is some redness and swelling for two – three days (bleph) and the microdots can take up to 10 days to heal. It is not suitable for Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI.
Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP)
Cold plasma technology is an emerging modality facilitating controlled delivery of a multitude of reactive species (ROS) to the skin. Plasmaporation is effectively used for percutaneous absorption, skin rejuvenation, tightening, anti-inflammatory, purification, sterilization and wound healing. It is suitable for all skin types with zero downtime.
Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP) stimulates the proliferation and migration of keratinocytes and fibroblasts in addition to sterilisation of the skin's surface. This offers multiple benefits:
Destroys Bacteria – cold atmospheric achieved an antibacterial reduction of > 99.9%. The sterilisation can help control the over-activity which causes flare ups and inflammation.
Aids Absorption – plasma energy effectively creates tiny openings between cells for direct absorption increasing product efficacy and transdermal delivery.
Accelerated Healing – a single treatment of cold atmospheric plasma is shown to be safe, effective and painless, decreasing bacterial load by 40% in plasma treated wounds without any side effects.
Skin Regeneration – activates angiogenesis-related molecules in skin keratinocytes, fibroblasts and endothelial cells which increases the production of collagen and elastin.
Alopecia - cold plasma has successfully been used to treat alopecia areata.
Occlusions - cold plasma has successfully been used in combination with hyaluronidase to treat vascular occlusion following dermal filler complications.
