What is a Chemical Peel
Chemical peels date back to 1550 BC. The popular treatment utilises an acid solution which is applied to the skin to slough away the outer layers. The solutions used during a peel normally contain a mix of alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids.
Categories
Chemical peels are categorised: superficial, medium, and deep. A superficial peel, which targets the upper epidermis, removes dead skin cells from only the top layer of the skin. A medium peel also targets the outer layers but penetrates slightly deeper to the dermal epidermal junction and possibly the papillary dermis. A deep peel offers higher risk of complications and often require anaesthesia. Superficial and medium peels pose fewer risks and are the popular choice for practitioners and clients alike.
How Does a Peel Work
A chemical peel sloughs away the dead skin cells from the epidermal layers and consequently stimulates new cell formation in the deeper layers. Different acids can be used to target multiple concerns. The formula and pH of the peel are significant factors to consider when choosing the right peel.
AHA or BHA
AHA stands for alpha hydroxy acid. BHA stands for beta hydroxy acid.
AHAs are water-soluble acids made from fruits. They help peel away the surface of your skin so that new, more evenly pigmented skin cells may generate and take their place.
BHAs are oil-soluble and can get deeper into the pores to remove dead skin cells and excess sebum.
The purpose of both AHAs and BHAs is to exfoliate and purge the skin.
Neither type of hydroxy acid is “better” than the other. Both are highly effective methods of deep exfoliation and rejuvenation.
